November 25, 2021

China is set to donate 200 000 additional doses of Sinopharm vaccines to Namibia, Chinese Ambassador to Namibia Zhang Yiming announced on Thursday.

Zhang said although modalities regarding the donation are still being worked out between the two countries, the vaccines are aimed at contributing towards the country’s fight against COVID-19.

“In March this year, when COVID-19 vaccines were in short supply globally, the Chinese Government took the lead to donate 100 000 doses of Sinopharm vaccine to Namibia. Today we feel relieved to see that the pandemic has been largely brought under control in Namibia, with new cases being reported in just single digits each day. The vaccines will go a long way in contributing to the fight against COVID-19 , especially now with talk of the 4th wave in some countries,” he said.

He said a timeline had not been set on when the donation will arrive in the country.

“We still need to engage the relevant government departments,” he said.

Starting Monday ,22 November, the Sinopharm vaccine which is being administered in Namibia, is now recognized for United Kingdom (UK) inbound travel.
