BoN to host SADC central bank governors

Central Bank Governors from across Southern Africa are set to convene for the 57th Committee of Central Bank Governors (CCBG) meeting to be held in Swakopmund, Namibia on the 8th of September 2023.

The gathering will be hosted by the Bank of Namibia (BoN), with a panel discussion on the critical theme of 'Sustainability in the Financial System' planned.

“This engagement will seek to champion home-grown and context-specific responses to green financing while propelling the region to be at the forefront of the sustainability agenda,” said BoN.

The discussion will be graced by five panelists, namely, the Governor of the South African Reserve Bank and Chair of the CCBG, Lesetja Kganyago; the Governor of the Bank of Namibia, Johannes !Gawaxab; the Governor of the Bank of Mozambique, Rogério Zandamela; Executive Board Member of the Deutsche Bundesbank, Dr. Sabine Mauderer and the Chief Executive Officer of the Environmental Investment Fund of Namibia, Benedict Libanda.

This comes as BoN in July hosted central bank Governors of the Common Monetary Area (CMA); South Africa, Lesotho and Eswatini for the second quarterly CMA Governor’s meeting.

The CCBG was created by SADC Ministers responsible for national financial matters in July 1995 and approved by the SADC Council at their meeting in August 1995.

The establishment of the committee was the result of the need for a specialized body in SADC to promote and achieve closer cooperation among central banks within the Community, given  their role in promoting financial and economic development by pursuing policies that enhance financial and macroeconomic stability.

The CCBG consists of 15 Governors from the SADC central banks. The CCBG deals with the development of financial institutions and markets, cooperation regarding international and regional financial relations, and monetary, investment, and foreign exchange policies.
