Sisedi launches Namibian financial sector diversity and inclusion initiative

October 01, 2023

Namibia’s first black and female-owned asset management company, Sisedi Investment Group, has launched a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Mentorship Program aimed at empowering and uplifting women in the country’s investment sector.

"Recognizing the societal disadvantages faced by many individuals, particularly women of color, our mentorship program aims to foster diversity and inclusion in the investment sector. The program offers well-rounded guidance that not only provides theoretical support but also practical skill sharing. Sisedi aspires to cultivate a new generation of employable investment professionals who can thrive and excel irrespective of their background,” said Hertha !Gones, CEO and Co-Founder of Sisedi Investment Group.

According to the CFA Society of South Africa, which has endorsed and is supporting the mentorship program, Namibia currently has only 32 CFA holders.

"CFA has a comprehensive curriculum and practical implementation of investment management concepts. There are no other qualifications that come close in depth and coverage, hence its continued appeal to upcoming investment professionals,” said Yvonne Mwilima, Portfolio and Co-Founder at Sisedi Investment Group and Namibia’s first black female CFA holder.

"As Namibia seeks to expand and diversify its financial industry, the CFA designation becomes increasingly vital in ensuring that financial professionals meet international standards and uphold ethical principles.”

The CFA Mentorship Program will start accepting applications for mentees in January.

The asset manager also launched The Money Market Unit Trust Fund, which provides a safe and accessible platform for individuals and organizations to grow their savings while contributing to the nation's economic development.

The launch event also featured a panel discussion under the theme "Securing the Bag,” with panelists including Presidential Youth Advisor, Daisry Obal, Financial and Wellness Coach, Afra Schimming-Chase, and Entrepreneur and Author, Twapewa Kadhikwa.

The discussion provided valuable insights into the intersections of wealth, diversity, and the need for a more inclusive finance industry.
