Namibia plans introduction of smart IDs

The Cabinet has approved the introduction of a Contactless Microchip in Namibian Identity Documents (IDs).

As part of the plans, the Cabinet has directed the Ministry of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety, and Security to consider introducing digital IDs that encompass all national documents.

The initiative aims to minimize costs and ensure the interoperability of systems.

Smart ID cards consist of a microchip that will store the necessary biometric data unique to every individual.

The smart cards according to South Africa which introduced them in 2013, cut down on the fraudulent use of fake or stolen IDs, as the cards are nearly impossible to forge.
